Last night I did an open mic at The Dive in South Philadelphia. Small crowd, but nice people. It was a little odd because it was all musicians, then I went up with my little stories.

I did my story about the woman spy who wakes up after a hard night of partying that should have been work and the one about the two friends from college and roommates who get into an argument over whether one has cut enough weight to have a Pepsi.

I got laughs, and a lot of props after. It's nice to be different.

When I went up, I started making random comments to the crowd like I always do. It's my way of working the room, of course, but host (who is one of these anxious, eager to please, blue collar musicians) kept talking back to me in a low voice, as if my comments were directed at him. This completely intercepted my vibes to the crowd. It was frustrating. Then he even took the mic over to make a comment in the middle of one of my riffs (wrecking my lead in to an actual joke).

Frustrating. You'd think if someone had been playing bars as long as he said he had, he would know how to tell when someone is warming up a crowd instead of actually chatting.

Still, the actual performances went well. And I passed out quarter sheets so that people would visit the site.
