Last night, I put the last words down to paper of the novel I've been working on since April of 2002. As I said before, still plenty of work to do.

I write by hand. I'm old school that way. I went back to the first notebook I used to start this thing in (a Christmas gift from a staff exchange in 2001) to have a look at what I wrote at the very beginning. I was struck by two things.

1) My handwriting. It's like it was written by a completely different person. I wish I still had handwriting like that. My handwriting is all over the place from day to day. Maybe I have schizophrenia and it's a sign of my mental decline?

2) I started the project off by writing one of my epically long short stories about a little boy who's going to school when fascists take over the country and how he eventually starts going after his teachers with machetes.

I had totally forgotten about this story. I don't think I ever typed it up. I think the idea was that it was a story that captured the main characters view of authority when he was in high school. Incidentally, it's reminiscent of a story I wrote when I was in middle school, though I'm sure the actual text of that story has been lost to time.

This was a very long, very detailed story, written in my own hand... and it was as if I had never seen it before.
